Jacó Beach, Costa Rica — What was set to be one of the most anticipated surfing showdowns of the season took an unexpected turn this weekend. Irish surfer Holly Staunton, considered a top contender for the gold medal, was forced to withdraw from the competition in Costa Rica after sustaining a wrist injury during practice.

Staunton, who had been training intensively for the event was devistated. Medical staff confirmed that competing would pose too great a risk for long term damage, leaving Staunton with no option.

Her withdrawal paved the way for Sara Freyer, Staunton’s main rival and fellow finalist, to be awarded the gold medal automatically. While the victory came without the much-anticipated head-to-head clash, Freyer expressed both joy and sympathy in her post-event remarks.

"I can't say enough about the outstanding support I got from everyone, thanks to my coaches, managers, friends, family, my sponsors and everyone who was envolved. I want to Congratulate Sara for the win."
